After a long fight with Emphysema and COPD, George Walters Sr., Sandhill Quilting Co., Inc.'s Chairman

of the Board passed away on May 19, 2004. 

     Mr. Walters began his career serving the furniture manufacturing industry by starting Cherokee Batting of

Cheraw, SC. Cherokee Batting was a cotton batting fiber manufacturer for the Carolinas' furniture

manufacturing industry. In serving the furniture industry, Mr. Walters saw a need for a quilted furniture moving

van pad manufacturer. After researching the raw material availability and market potential, he founded

Sandhill Quilting Company Inc.
     Sandhill Quilting began production on 2-28-62 in Cheraw, SC in a 5,000 square-foot rented facility,

with five employees, one quilting machine, and three sewing machines. Sandhill's early success would

not have been possible without the active support at home and in the office from his late wife, Mary Emma

Hill Walters.
     In 1973, Sandhill Quilting moved its manufacturing into a new 30,000 square-foot facility in Wallace, SC.

Eight expansions later, Sandhill enlarged its original size to 120,000 square foot. The company expanded

again in 1995 with a 7,500 square-foot retail facility in Atlanta. In 1996, Sandhill was selected by

Kimberly-Clark to produce a 100% polyester, mildew proof, and non-flammable pad for the moving industry.

In 1997, Sandhill opened a 7,500 square-foot facility in Louisville KY to service new trailer sales with van

equipment. In 2005, our Louisville warehouse doubled its capacity to 15,000 sq. ft.
     For 42 years, Mr. Walters served the moving industry stressing quality as the major difference between

winning or loosing customers. With each of Sandhill's expansions in production and warehouse

facilities, Mr. Walters was actively involved. His help was instrumental in Sandhill Quilting's continued rise

to the nation's largest domestic manufacturer of quilted moving pads and fitted covers.
     Mr. Walters felt strongly about supporting his local community's youth. Sandhill has the pleasure of

sponsoring two Girl Scout troops, a Dixie league baseball team, and football team for the Wallace

community.
     Sandhill Quilting's goal for the next 42 years will be to re-enforce George Walters Sr.'s goals of integrity,

quality and service.
